Tasca Sherman Construction Tips

The lower hull of a Tasca Sherman is made up of individual pieces rather than the more conventional single piece, Fig. 1.  At first glance it might appear very simple; however it is quite elegant and well executed.  With a little finesse, the structure almost falls together in a very precise fashion.  The first step is to remove the parts from the tree and clean up the attachment points.  At this stage you can begin to appreciate how well Tasca has designed this assembly.  There are minimal attachment points and most are strategically placed to be out of the way of the mating surfaces.  I tape the four main components together, Fig. 4.  The key here is to tack cement the area indicated in the circle making sure that the bulkhead is squarely down on the hull bottom.  Do this on both sides.  Also check underneath the hull to verify that the hull bottom is flush with the hull sides.

The bottoms of sponsons are taped in place.  The guide here is the corner area in the circle, Fig. 3.  Make sure all three pieces are coming together to form a nice corner and apply some cement.  At this point, I apply some cement in various joints to tack everything together and place a weight in the center of the hull while it is resting on a flat surface.  The end is glued to place and cement is applied to all joint areas.  I weight the hull again while the cement sets, Fig. 4.
